Application Cases for SAM DZM402

Main Propulsion Diesel Engine Overspeed Protection for Seagoing Vessels
Installed inside the MCS2500 automation subrack and interfaced with the main diesel engine’s magnetic pickup (MPU) speed sensor, the module serves as a dedicated hardware backup overspeed trip unit. In the event of governor failure and excessive engine speed, its relay output initiates fuel cutoff protection to prevent severe mechanical damage. It is widely deployed on container ships, bulk carriers and general cargo vessels with DNV-certified safety loops.

Marine Turbocharger Speed Monitoring
The DZM402 monitors turbocharger rotational speed through MPU sensors and triggers alarms for overspeed and underspeed abnormalities. It transmits real-time speed measurements and fault status to the Stellamar engine monitoring system, providing early fault warnings for turbocharger surge, abnormal vibration and bearing degradation, which supports daily marine machinery condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Shaft Zero-Speed Interlock for Turning Gear Engagement
The module continuously monitors the rotational speed of the propeller shaft and provides zero-speed interlock relay signals. The turning gear can only be safely engaged when the shaft speed falls below the preset threshold, effectively eliminating mechanical collision risks during equipment maintenance. This application is standard in shaft monitoring cabinets for large merchant vessels.

Auxiliary Generator Speed Interlock and Synchronization Control
It collects shaft speed signals from shipboard auxiliary generators and outputs speed-based relay status signals for pre-synchronization interlock and load shedding logic. Real-time speed data is uploaded to the SAM Electronics ship automation system to support generator protective tripping under overspeed and underspeed fault conditions, ensuring stable power system operation.

Retrofit and Spare Part Replacement for Legacy Ship Automation Systems
The module is commonly used to replace aging speed relay modules on in-service vessels. It features full compatibility with the original MCS2500 plug-in subrack structure without cabinet modification. Parameters can be configured via local front panel buttons or MCS-Tool software, greatly shortening shipyard retrofit and commissioning cycles, making it ideal for vessel automation upgrade projects.

Auxiliary Machinery Safety Monitoring for Offshore Support Vessels
With marine-grade certification and strong vibration resistance, the DZM402 is applied for speed supervision of offshore emergency diesel engines and hydraulic power units. It provides reliable overspeed alarm and protective trip functions for critical rotating equipment under harsh offshore operating environments.
